Being in an abusive relationship – it’s dark, painful and scary. My experience left me feeling lonely, depressed and anxious. I tried many years to fight silently, but eventually I knew I needed to do something. I needed to leave, for me and my children.
I went to the drop-in at Manchester Women’s Aid, and I quickly learnt I wasn’t alone after all – I was introduced to beautiful, hard-working women, who stood by me every step of the way.
I moved into a refuge – a roof over mine and my children’s heads – where we had security, a place there was no fear, and there was no-one there to manipulate me or make me feel small. Manchester Women’s Aid supported me; they provided for mine and my children’s needs. With their support, I started to believe that I am worthy, that I have the right to feel safe and live in peace without anybody controlling me.
