ESOL
Women experiencing domestic abuse/violence whose first language is not English can face particular challenges in seeking appropriate support for her and her family and this can lead to isolation. To support these women, Manchester Women’s Aid has an ESOL tutor who works with women to learn basic English language skills and therefore empowering the women to make their own choices.
The classes are run in a safe and supportive environment and the experienced female tutor will help ESOL women to improve their English language skills by for example,
Practising making appointments and talking to GP’s about health
Telephone skills – help with enquiries about accommodation, utilities, setting up a bank account
How to access services such as income support, further education and applying for work
Making arrangements to speak with children’s teachers
Assisting with children’s homework
